Privacy policy

Last updated 14 October 2026

mdwisp is a Markdown viewer and editor for macOS, Linux and Windows, published by Gailleur Labs. This policy covers the app and this website.

What the app collects

Nothing. mdwisp has no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting, no automatic update check and no telemetry of any kind. It never makes a network request on its own. Your documents stay on your disk and are read only when you open them.

What leaves your computer

Only what you ask for.

Checking for updates. When you choose Help ▸ Check for Updates (or the link in the About box), the app fetches one small file, https://mdwisp.com/latest.json, which lists the newest release. The request carries no version number, identifier or other information about you or your computer; the comparison with your installed version happens on your machine. If you then choose to install, the app downloads the new build from GitHub and verifies its signature before installing it. Nothing is sent back. The Mac App Store version does not do this at all; its updates come through the App Store.

Remote images. If a document embeds an image from the web and you turn on View ▸ Remote Images, the app fetches that image from the address in your document, and the site hosting it sees that request.

Links open in your browser. Printing and PDF export use your system's own print service. None of this involves Gailleur Labs beyond serving the release manifest.

What the app stores

A few preferences on your own machine: window size and position, theme, zoom, whether the outline is shown, and whether you answered the one-time question about making mdwisp the default Markdown app. The Mac App Store version also keeps a record of folders you have granted access to, so images beside your documents keep loading. These stay in your user account and are never transmitted.

This website

mdwisp.com is a static page served by Vercel. It uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and visitors: it sets no cookies, does no cross-site tracking, and identifies a visitor only by a hash that Vercel discards after the day. Apart from that one script it loads nothing from third parties; the version line on the front page is read from this site's own /latest.json. Vercel, as the hosting provider, keeps standard server logs for operating the service, and that includes requests for the release manifest; see Vercel's privacy policy. Downloads, including in-app updates, are served by GitHub under GitHub's privacy statement.
